Mathematical Needs Project

The final reports of the project can be found here:

The project was divided in two strands and was informed by desk-based research, interviews, seminars with stakeholders in the mathematics community and current litterature review.

Outputs

The final reports were launched on 14 June 2011 and the reports are now available online. Please contact us at acme@royalsociety.org if you would like hardcopies of the reports.

Current activities

ACME is currently working on disseminating the final reports of the project and feeding some of the outcomes to the National Curriculum review.

Aim of the project

ACME has just finished working on a proactive project on 'Mathematical Needs' which examined how both national and individual mathematical needs of 5-19 learners can best be met by a curriculum and delivery policy and implementation framework. The project was divided into two parallel themes looking at mathematical needs from a 'top down' (Theme A) and 'bottom up' (Theme B) perspective.

The rationale for this project was to provide evidence on which to formulate an appropriate provision of mathematics education across the 5 - 19 age range.  Our aim was to make evidence on mathematical needs available in a form which will provide an agreed basis for future decision making. The overall vision for the work is that we will move to a situation where national mathematical needs are a major consideration in relevant policy decisions.
