Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME)

STEM High Level Strategy Group

The ACME Chair sits on the DCSF/DIUS STEM High Level Strategy Group to provide an additional mathematical perspective. This group joins up STEM across all phases of education and makes recommendations to Ministers about national STEM priorities.

The DCSF/DIUS STEM High Level Strategy Group recently asked ACME to produce a paper on the latest issues facing the 5 - 19 mathematics education landscape. This paper was presented to the group at the 12 June meeting, by the chair of ACME.

Background

The DCSF has been leading the work designed to develop a better delivery system for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) initiatives and activities. The original STEM-mapping review in 2004 identified a plethora of schemes designed to encourage greater up-take of science subjects in schools and colleges. The subsequent STEM Cross Cutting Programme, a joint programme between DCSF and DIUS has focussed on creating a more effective delivery framework, ensuring that all schools and colleges have access to and are able to make use of the material and initiatives available.

The Departments published the STEM programme report on 10 October 2006 and are moving towards implementation of its proposals. One of the recommendations was to establish a high level STEM Strategy Group to help drive this very important and challenging agenda forward. Since then, the STEM 5-19 Programme Board and Monitoring Group have both been set up and on which ACME has representation. ACME is the lead organisation on Mathematics Enrichment and Enhancement work.
