This conference brought together 250 participants including mathematics teachers from primary, secondary and FE sectors and leading figures in mathematics education to continue the momentum of change initiated by Professor Adrian Smith's comprehensive report, Making Mathematics Count, in 2004.
The morning session offered updates on the policy changes developed over the last two years, from curriculum to CPD, and looked ahead to how these policies might be implemented. With the former Secretary of State for Education and Skills (88KB) as the keynote speaker, the morning session included input from:

- Alison Kitson, Programme Leader for CPD, Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) (227 KB)
- Professor David Burghes, Director of the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (331 KB)
- Professor Adrian Smith FRS (368 KB)
- Sir Peter Williams CBE FRS, ACME Chair (92 KB)
- Professor Celia Hoyles, Chief Adviser on Mathematics Department for Education and Skills (DfES) (89 KB)
In the afternoon, delegates separated into discussion groups which focused on two themes: Curriculum - GCSE Mathematics and NCETM - CPD for teachers of mathematics. A papers on sequential models for double award GCSE in mathematics (36 KB) and another paper on parallel double award GCSE Mathematics (16 KB) were also circulated to aid discussion on GCSE Mathematics. Feedback from each theme was reported back briefly to a plenary session.
